Mayan World Museum of Mérida, Mexico 🇲🇽

We visited this museum while spending some vacation days and New Year’s Eve in Mérida, Mexico, in December 2023.

The museum is aimed to celebrate the Maya culture and it houses a permanent collection of more than 1100 remarkably well-preserved artifacts, including a reclining chac-mool sculpture from Chichén Itzá and a cool underworld figure unearthed at Ek’ Balam. The museum is a great place to learn about the Maya culture and take a close look at some of the fascinating pieces found at different Maya sites all over the Yucatan peninsula.

Inaugurated in 2012, the building was designed in the form of a ceiba, a sacred tree believed by the Maya to connect the living with the underworld and the heavens above. On a wall outside, the museum offers a free light-and-sound show at night. It is located about 12km north of downtown Merida on the road to Progreso.

The photos presented below showcase some of the pieces and information that captured my attention most.
