Boyce Thompson Arboretum – Superior, AZ

The Boyce Thompson Arboretum is located in Superior, Arizona, about an hour’s drive from Phoenix. It features 343-acres of beautiful landscapes with over 3,900 different species of plants, hidden gardens along miles of trails, and historic buildings. A haven for wildlife, the Arboretum has been called “the most enchanting” important birding Area in Arizona.

As presented in its website, the Arboretum was founded in 1924 by William Boyce Thompson, a mining magnate who understood the importance of plants as the ultimate source of our survival and wellbeing. That legacy continues today as the Arboretum offers tours, classes and events, bringing a wide community together in appreciation of the astounding diversity of its growing collection.

The arboretum provides an opportunity to experience the beauty of the Arizona Upland Sonoran Desert, and is indeed Arizona’s oldest and largest botanical garden. We visited it in April 2023, while taking advantage of the nice weather during the Spring season to walk through it. Some photos I took while visiting it are presented below.
