The Joseph Stalin Museum – Gori, Georgia ðŸ‡¬ðŸ‡ª

After spending a couple of days in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, we continued our road trip throughout this country and drove towards the country’s capital, Tbilisi.

We decided to stop for one night in the small city of Gori, the birthplace of Joseph Stalin, since it has a memorial museum devoted to him. This museum was initially opened in 1937, during Stalin’s lifetime, in the house where he was born.

Nowadays, the museum is located in a two-storeyed building with a tower, which was built by the architect Archil Kurdiani. The complex of the museum includes the memorial house, Stalin’s train wagon, and the two-storeyed exhibition building. A statue of Stalin is also located in front of the building, and it was created by the sculptor Silovan Kakabadze.

The museum presentes a permanent exposition, which illustrates Stalin’s life and activities organized in six halls: the materials in the first hall illustrate Stalin’s activities before and during the revolution. The second hall embraces the period of 1925-1939 of the Soviet history, when the Party led by Stalin fought for the economic and cultural development of the country. In the third hall, there are documentary photos of the period of World War II. It is possible to see here some photos taken at Teheran, Yalta, and several conferences. One of the most interesting photos of Stalin without retouch is exhibited here. In the fourth hall, the sixth copies of Stalin’s death mask are placed between marble pillars, while presenta sent to Stalin by different countries worldwide are exhibited in the fifth hall of the museum. Finally, there are some personal items that belonged to Stalin, which are shown in the soxth hall, which includes his study where he worked in 1918-1922. A separate room of the museum is devoted to the period of repressions, which has been in place in the museum since 2010.

These are some photos of the items that captured my attention most while visiting it:

This is the small house where Stalin was born and raised. It is still preserved aside the museum.
